Rachel ChinQ Artist Statement

I create paintings rooted in culture, color, and presence. My work explores identity and how it shifts depending on where we are—and who we are in those places. Born in the U.S. with Jamaican and Chinese ancestry, I often pull from the visual language of the Caribbean, global travel, and daily life to build images that feel both specific and universal.

Each piece is a way of capturing what I’ve seen, felt, or remembered—whether it’s a market scene in Kingston or the silence of a Paris morning. I’m not trying to document things perfectly. I paint instinctively, chasing the energy of a moment rather than its exact detail.

My art isn’t about telling you where I’ve been. It’s about giving you a sense of what it felt like to be there.
